At the welcome screen it shows me (administrator) having 1 mail message but
I have none. I checked with my ISP who went in and checked on their end for
e-mail but I have none. My ISP told me to call Microsoft. DELL told me to
call my ISP. This has been going on for two weeks. I am running version
5.1 service pack 1 if that helps.

Thanks in advance

This is thanks to MS Messenger. It *is* aggravating becuase it seems to
always be out of synch with Hotmail (which is what I think it is yelping
about). I think it is a feature of the new Messenger 6.0 which I recently
installed myself and experienced more or less the same frustration as you. I
think if you cause the Messenger app to exit then the messages on the
welcome screen go away. You can stop Messenger by right clicking on the
messenger icon in the systray (usually lower right).

I dont have Messsenger running. I did however go into it and check and I
have no mail there. Any other suggestions?

Thanks

It's happening again-can you tell me why or give me a permanent fix
please.....All this happened after I formatted my new HD....

Suggestion:

Go to Start/Run and type in: control userpasswords2. Advanced/Manage
Passwords/Remove.

Add Control Userpasswords2 to the Control Panel (Line 1)

Note from a previous poster of what worked, with and other than the above:

"Going to hotmail.com and syncing OE temporary solved the problem I then
received some more emails and read them all. Maybe it takes a while for the
welcome screen to sync when messages are read but no delay when messages
arrive."
