e-mail from a Windows 2000 server

How do get my Windows 2000 server to for example e-mail me a critical event
from the event log?

To do this you need to create Performance Log Alerts. To do so, please
visit the KB article mentioned below:

In this article, please take a moment when reading the bullet point number
10. Here you need to run a program that would trigger an email application
to send an email.

What would be a good e-mail application to use? I guess what I am asking is
what do most Windows 2000 admins use to automatically send mail(alerts, event
logs, etc) from Windows 2000 servers to there own e-mail accounts?
