E-Mail being delivered, but disappearing

D

OK, here we go.

Whenever I log onto Outlook and do a send & receive, the status bar
shows, for example, "receiving 1 of 5". It then proceeds to progress
through the receipt of the five e-mails and finishes.

However, when completed, there is no mail in my Inbox! It's not in any
other folders either. It's just not there!!

I have no rules in to send mail to a folder, and when I log onto the
web service, there are no e-mails there, so I can only assume that they
are being delivered. Yet, there's nothing in my Inbox. Zip. Zilch.
Nothing.

It has only recently started happening. The only thing I did was set
up an additional mail profile, under XP, for a totally different e-mail
address. When I logon to Outlook, it prompts me for the profile. If I
select the secondary profile, the new one recently created, the only
mail that gets delivered there is the mail for that profile.

However, if I log onto the main profile, which has always been there
and has worked OK, mail gets delivered, but just dissapears.

Can someone help me? Have I lost these e-mails or is there some way I
can get them back?

Anyones help is appreciated.

TIA

What version of Outlook? POP account I assume? If you have OL 2003/2007,
does the Unread Message folder indicate where the message is?

Sorry, I should have provided more information.

I'm using Outlook 2003. When I load Outlook, it does an automatic Send /
Receive.

The status bar shows, for example, "Receiving message 1 of 8", which then
changes to "Receiving message 2 of 8", and so on until all 8 are delivered.

However, when the delivery is complete, the 8 messages are nowhere to be
found. They do not appear in my inbox, or in the unread messages folder.

They're just not there.

Do you have any applications that scan your incoming mail, sich as antivirus
or -spam scanners? If so, disable them. Also, see if startiing Outlook in
safe mode changes the behavior.

Brian,

My anti-virus software scans incomming mail, but it always has done.
However, I disabled this part of it, and e-mails are still disapearing.

By "Starting Outlook in Safe Mode", I take it you mean re-booting into
Safe Mode and launching Outlook? If so, then I tried that it still
disappears. I did not however realise, that you could start Outlook in
"Safe" mode. So, I will try that tonight when I get home, and let you
know how it goes.

Many thanks for your help so far.

No. Click Start>Run. In the Open field, enter

outlook.exe /safe

Click OK.

Nonetheless, disable the scanning for troubleshooting purposes.

Before all this, make sure your are not using old pst format that got 2GB
restriction & your pst is not currently at the limit.

Brian et al,

I've tried re-starting Outlook in safe mode and the following happened.

There were 49 e-mails on the server, so I started Outlook using /safe.
It now appears that some of the e-mails are being delivered, whilst
others are not.

There are no rules setup in Outlook to direct the mail elsewhere, or to
delete it. The .PST file is in the "updated" format. The e-mail virus
scanner has been disabled. However, from the 49 e-mails on the server,
only 5 were actually delivered!!

I am now totally confused and don't know what to do / where to go from
here.

Can anyone help...please!!!

Were these all new mesasges?

Were they contiguous (i.e., all "adjacent" to each other) or scattered
throughout the mailbox? Have you tried enabling diagnostic logging to see
what Outlook thinks is going on?

This is certainly a completely different problem than the one you started
this thread describing.

It's OK, I have solved the mystery of the dissapearing e-mails!

For some reason, and I don't know how, the option to "permanently
delete junk e-mail" had been switched on. The deleted e-mails were all
being classed as junk, and so deleted from the the download.

I've now altered the setting and all e-mails are comming through.

Thanks for your help Brian.
