Dynex CD/DVD writer-recorder drives in XP: ID Problems

Has anyone experience problems w/new Dynex combo CD/DVD writers in XP (Home
or Pro), especially with Dell systems (Dimension 4300 specifically)???

A client upgraded from the non working original CD-writer to a new Dynex
CD/DVD writer-recorder and drive is NOT recognized by XP Home. Client had
BIOS A02; we upgraded to A06 and drive is still not being recognized by XP
Home. I recommended going to the Dynex website and seeing if they had any
additional info on this inoperability. This is the first time I remember
seeing a problem with a hardware device not being recognized by the O/S.
These drives also do NOT come with any drivers; supposedly PnP
compatible...............

Check in the BIOS, is it recognized there? Try using the autodetect feature
of your BIOS.

The drive is being properly recocnized by the BIOS in the setup program;
client war running Dell A02 revision and BIOS properly recognized the drive,
but WinXP Home would not. In fact, XP Home says no CD/DVD drive is present,
only single HD and floppy. I personally thought that the new BIOS revision
would take care of the problem, but possibly could be a defective drive???

It could very well be but have you done the basics? Remove existing drivers
and reboot? Check the registry for upperfilters and lowerfilters and reboot
and let the OS rebuild them if it's required? I'd try those if you haven't
already. If you have and the problem still exists it's time to send it back.

There were no "Drivers" per se, but the hardware references were removed from
the old CD-ROM that stopped working. The more I think about this, the more I
am convinced the new drive is bad........... Thanks all for your helpful
responses.
