DVI vs. VGA

How much extra is it worth for DVI over VGA? I have two IBM P275 monitors
for a dual head system, looking for ATI x1600 card.

thanks,
Alfred

Depends if the monitors have DVI, and if not, are you planning on
changing them to DVI ones before the next graphics card change.

I have 2 Hitachi CML174 TFT screens at work, they do both DVI and VGA,
unfortunately the video card on the work machine on has 1 DVI, the
other output it VGA, and you can really see the difference.

If you're using, or planning on using TFT's, DVI is the way to go.

Dodgy:

Just wondering, if you used the DVI to VGA doggle, and then feed both
monitors VGA, would that look better balancing out the feeds? Or do you
loose so much going analogue you are willing to tolerate the difference? My
two TFT's are analogue only, so I had no choice but to use the doggle and go
VGA on both outs.

Inquiring minds want to know.

There is a difference, but not as substatial as one might think. It all
depends on the monitor though. My Dell 2005FPW seems to be able to adjust
well and give a clear picture. Of course you can tell the difference with
DVI once you've used it for a while.

My NEC 1770GX looks better on vga off a 9600pro than it did through DVI on
an xt800gt02. Better blacks (due to slower refresh rate I've read) and less
"red fringing" on text. The red is mild and seldom visible on the text but
it is there. Haven't bothered trying to re-route cables yet. But the ati
9600pro is perfect on vga, couldn't improve it in any way.
