I have a MicroAdvantage DVD drive that has been
working fine for 6 months. A few days ago, it stopped
recognizing DVDs. A few facts:
-It still reads CDs
-Still shows up as a drive

Based on the number of similair posts, it looks this is a
XP "bug".

In response to the problem, I have recently:
-reinstalled DVD software (Power DVD and InterVideo Win
DVD).
-uninstalled and reinstalled DVD driver (multiple times)
-installed Adptec's download
-Updated DVD Firmware
-Changed drives "transfer mode" to PIO
-reviewed 30 pages of MS newsgroup

So, what do I do from here?? I think next week I'll
rewire my CD/DVD drives such that the DVD is the master.
I'll take the CD off-line in an attempt to isolate the
problem.

Any other thoughts you may have will be appreciated!

I'll be sure to let you know how this tragic "man Vs
machine" epic ends :)

Cari suggested I clean the DVD. I used a Memorex CD/DVD
cleaning disk. DVD drive would not recognnize it.

I have also uninstalled both CD (Master) and DVDRW (S)
drives, rebooted, shut down, connected DVDRW drive as
master. Still does not recognize DVDs, but it no longer
reports that a "Insert DisK".

In MY COMPUTER under TYPE, should the DVDRW/CD drive show
up as DVD or CD Drive? Currently, my computer reports CD
Drive.

Very frustrating. Any help/ideas would be appreciated.

This may not help you at all, but sometimes, DVD writers do not take
kindly to being a slave drive when the master on the IDE channel is a
CD drive... I had (false) drive failure problems/messages when I
tried to install my DVD writer as a slave drive to my CD writer..
Once I switched them (making the DVD writer the master, and the CD
writer the slave), my post-test "failures" stopped occurring.. My
DVD is not a MicroAdvantage, but perhaps your problem may be
similar...

In "My Computer", my DVD writer shows up as DVD/CD-RW Drive..

I would also check in device manager, and see if your drive is being
correctly identified there or not... It should be *specifically*
identified by type, brand, and model in device manager ( settings -->
control panel --> system --> hardware --> device manager -->
DVD/CD-ROM drives )
