DVD writer drive not being recognized

I'd appreciate any suggestions on how to make Windows XP
recognized my new DVD writer. We have a DVD writer as
well as a DVD player in our PC. Windows will only
recognize the DVD player. The DVD writer is being
recognized as a CD player. We have installed and
uninstalled and the problem continues to exist. Has
anyone else encountered such a problem, as if so - have
you been able to correct it?
