DVD/VCR Recommendation??

J

jimbo

I have an older Panasonic DVD/VCR combo unit, (D4762). It has an
outstanding TV tuner/VCR player. I actually get a better picture on my
TV using the Panasonic tuner than I do with the TV. And one older tape
I have plays without a flaw in the VCR while a new Sony VCR and an
older Toshiba VCR could not track properly giving a wavy bottom half
of the screen. I don't know if Panasonic makes superior TV tuner/VCR
player components or if I just have an unusual model.

Anyway, I am in the market for a new VCR/DVD combo or for separate DVD
- VCR players. This unit would be dedicated to copy to DVD of some
existing VHS tapes, some that I recorded from TV and some I bought,
and for making backups of some DVDs that I own. I have a WinTV-PVR-250
TV/Capture card and a Pioneer DVR-108 DVD burner installed in my PC.

I would appreciate recommendations for a new DVD/VCR player(s) that
has functions and features and would meet the objectives that I outlined.

Thanks, jimbo

Wow! You already have 2 vcrs and the combo why not just go for a DVDR or PVR?
Especially PVR.

I returned the Sony when I found that it did no better than my old
Toshiba. And I have the WinTV which is a PVR. It is a TV tuner/capture
card from Hauppage. So, I have everything needed to capture from VCR
and burn to DVD, but the VCR quality is my concern. All current VCR
models appear to be low end, priced around $70. I was hoping someone
would have a recommendation for a VCR or VCR/DVD combo that would have
high quality video.

all recent VCRs are cheaply built garbage. If you have an older good one
keep it in good shape, get it serviced or maybe buy an older one from a
repair shop. if you really want to try new, the 5900 series and up JVC SVHS
are about as good as you'll find.

Understood. Can I suggest using slower speeds? I have a RCA
that records on almost everything well. But the newer cheaper Panasonic
does the waves at the bottom when playing tapes from the RCA except if I
use the LP or SP mode instead of the SLP mode. Yes shortens the
recording time but its good quality. Also the 160 min tapes seem to
get stuck around 1 hr into the tape if I try to rewind while playing on
the RCA.

I've got the jvc svhs, SP is ok, plays tapes off other machines well,
but EP on it is really substandard.

I hear the Mitsubishi VCR's are the way to go for quality.
