DVD SCSI Problem

I just upgraded to windows xp from windows 98, and now my
dvd drive cannot play movies. I used to use the Compaq
DVD Player program, but that no longer works and windows
media player just gets stuck and I have to force quit the
program - help. I am fairly new to computers, so I have
no idea what to do.
 
Windows Media player can not play DVD movies by itself, it must have a movie program such as
PowerDVD installed. WMP uses PowerDVD's (and others) codec to play the movie.
