DVD-RW problem w/Windows XP

My computer recognises all the drives correctly until I insert a blank
DVD for recording. As soon as I do this, the computer sees the drive as
a CD drive. Is this right and if not, how to fix? TIA!

I fugure many problems arise when SP2 is installed. can you try to
update the firmware of your dvd drive.
 
Do you have any 3rd party DVD writing software installed, like Nero ?? XP
by itself has NO capacity for writing to DVDs...

Yes, it should also indicate DVD-R in small print on the optical drives icon..
