DVD-RW Issues

Windows will not regocnize my drive as a DVDRW it will let it burn cd's but
not DVD's. I run it on a laptop and it worked in the past. I have
reinstalled windows xp and then updated everything I was supposed to becuase
I was having other issues but this one has now occured. Please can someone
help with this issue?

Not sure what the OP means by "I run it". However, the usual reason is that
the drive is broken. In particular, being able to burn cd's but not dvd's
points to a drive problem because different wavelengths of laser light are
used for the two formats.

My understanding is that Windows XP includes support for CDs to be burned
but not DVDs. In order to burn DVDs you need a separate application such as
Ahead Nero or one of the many free CD/DVD burning programs. If you have used
Windows XP to burn DVDs in the past then that was nothing short of a
miracle.
