DVD-RW Drive not reading copied DVDs

Hey everyone,

I have recently been having trouble with my NEC DVD_RW ND-4571A drive.
Whilst it still reads official disks perfectly (a DVD movie or software CD
for example), if I put one of my DVD data disks in the cursor displays a CD
whilst the drive reads the disk, but once it has finished reading, the icon
in My Computer changes from "DVD-RAM Drive (D:)" to "CD Drive (D:)" and the
open disk options window pops up saying "Blank CD".

The drive is less than 2 months old, and until recently read all of my data
disks perfectly. It's worth noting that I recently installed a new PSU, it's
a 430W Tagan TG420-U01, I'm not an expert but I have built and rebuilt my pc
for years and have had no problems.

I'd really appreciate any help or suggestions.
Thanks!
Alex

I'm going to jump on this bandwagon - I have the NEC DVD ND-3540a (dual
layer burner).

The behavior problem you describe is very similar if not the same as
the problem I'm having. The drive reads commercial DVDs/CDs and does
not seem to recognize data/video DVDs that I have burned (and others
have burned for me on other systems). So in my case it's not just DVD
movies - data DVDs also.

Strangely enough, even though blank CDrs/DVDs don't appear in "my
computer" (blank - I can use Nero to burn to them. The CD shows up
after the burn (audio or data burned in iTunes) and if
ejected/reinserted. The burned DVD shows up after burned (I can right
click explore and see files), but then if I eject and reinsert, the
burned DVD will not appear.

I've had this drive for a bit under a year and it's been pretty good.
In terms of "what has changed" - I recently installed IE 7 beta and
Windows Media 11beta. Upon having problems with certain applications I
rolled back to the non-beta/stable versions. I have a vague sense the
problem began cropping up (though not always) around the time the betas
were installed, but now it happens every time I put a burned disc in.

I would just order a new burner if I thought it was simply a hardware
problem...

Any ideas greatly appreciated,
Thanks,
Wayne
