DVD-ROM only seen in Safe Mode

I got this Matsushita DVD-ROM/CD-RW combo drive in a IBM ThinkPad notebook that windows doesn't see when in normal mode. Once I boot to Safe Mode, windows sees the drive. Has anybody had a problem similar to this one. If you have had this problem, please let me know how you solved it or how to work around the problem.
 
Check to see if a real mode driver for the DVD drive is installed in your
config.sys file.
