DVD ripping app?

Well, back to this issue. DVD Shrink ripped just great. No
encryption problems whatsoever. But it rips to a VOB format which
although WMP will play if one just changes extension to MPG (this tip
thanks to a DVD ng), VirtualDub doesn't recognize the format.

And I don't fancy ripping with DVD Shrink then using a VOB to VCD or
MPG or AVI or whatever conversion tool. As it is, I barely had enough
room on my 1.8 gigs free on my C drive for the short workout yesterday
that DVD Shrink ripped. Also, it took an hour to rip this so using a
conversion tool would also add too much time to the ripping process.

I'm currently trying Eazy-VCD but it's stuck on one of those
encryption problems.

Can anyone recommend something like Eazy-VCD? Something that is easy
to use, like this one is, but that has no problems with encryption, as
this one does?

The trouble with asking for help in a DVD ng, as I have been doing, is
that they give shareware solutions. So I'm back here. Hopefully
someone here knows of something. The way Eazy-VCD is going, I have no
assurance it will be able to rip this one.

Thanks much.

You may find this helpful: http://www.videohelp.com/sefy/?id=start1b.html
Not all the apps discussed are freeware, but an Eazy VCD tutorial is
included: http://www.videohelp.com/sefy/?id=start1b.html

The main videohelp site http://www.videohelp.com/sefy/?id=start1b.html
contains a wealth of info.

You'll need to free up more space on your hard drive if you're ripping
DVDs. If I understand correctly, you only have 1.8GB free at the moment?

Thanks because although the help file said it would rip to MPG or
other formats, I'm going by memory here, it actually ripped to VOB,
too, which is no good. So this will be good to check out as I think I
need more comprehensive help.

Super.

That will be a problem. I won't be able to free up too much more
space. However, I'm not interested in ripping movies at all. I don't
have a DVD player or anything and I have a great collection of movies
on tape that I've compiled over the year recording off the TV. I'm
lucky there <g>.

In this case, I'm dealing with workout videos. And fortunately, even
if they are on the longish side, if I can extrapolate from my
experiences of last couple of days, 1.8 gigs should do fine in most
cases. At least, DVD Shrink seemed to handle it just fine. And if I
can find an app that does the same as DVD Shrink but will allow me to
edit the result, which is the whole point, then that will work out
great. In other words, I need to figure out how to get EazyVCD to
output to a file that VirtualDub or other editing app can handle.

Just a bit of background as to the whys of all of this, I've been
buying fitness videos for years and what I've done up till now is to
edit my own using a second VCR. Very time-consuming and the results
weren't the best to start with. However, needs must and I've been
happy up till now with the results. Hopefully I can figure out how to
do this with DVDs. Also, I plan to capture all my VHS tapes
eventually, too.

Thanks.

Just a thought: Maybe you're going about this project the wrong way
entirely. It sounds to me like you'd be happiest if you could just copy a
DVD to a VHS tape directly, and then edit the video as you always have.
Instead of pursuing the computer software/hardware approach, consider
leaving the computer out of the process entirely. Most DVDs have some
form of copy protection which make it difficult to copy a decent image to
VHS, but there are tools to bypass this. I've got no experience in this
area, but a friend of ours has copied many DVD movies to VHS using some
sort of filter or stabilizer between his DVD player and his VCR. I just
did a brief Google search on the topic of DVD to VHS copying, and came
across this item which may or may not fit into the category:
http://www.facetvideo.com/xcart/customer/home.php Further Googling may
give you more insights into DVD to VHS copying.

A friend of my wife's used to copy DVD movies to VHS without any
additional hardware- he just connected his DVD player to the VCR and made
a copy. Why not give that a try- copy a few minutes of the video and then
have a look at how the copy is looking. You may find that workout videos,
which must surely be produced more cheaply than Hollywood blockbusters,
have no encryption at all, and allow a perfect VHS copy.

Please let me know if you have success with this. I'm a former fitness
instructor and I'm always happy to encourage others in their fitness
pursuits.

Ian.

If you are a keen freeware user I'm surprised you are not using "Media
Player Classic" rather than WMP.
...VirtualDub doesn't recognize the format.

If you want Virtualdub to recognise a vob file then you are better off using
"virtualdubmod", which opens them fine.

If you have a collection of vobs that you wish to cut and put on a dvd then
TMPGEnc DVD author may be a good bet, but it is 30 day shareware, but very
good software.

If anyone can reccomend a freeware replacement for DVD author then I would
be very glad to hear about it (ie one that can cut vobs and author them to a
dvd) as even though I have a registered copy of DVD author I am always keen
to source free alternatives.

DVD2SVCD http://www.dvd2dvd.org/
and
TMPGEnc
http://www.pricelessware.org/2004/PL2004MULTIMEDIA.htm#Editor:Audio-Video

This combo will convert DVD to VCD with one click. TMPGEnc's mpeg1 decoder
is free and will encode VCDs forever.
Read the tutorials
http://www.doom9.org/mpg/dvd2svcd.htm
Change "output file type" to VCD on the "Misc" tab
Select TMPGEnc on the "encoder" tab and make sure the path is correct.
