Just been given a DVD player but it has no software is there any free
program that will let me watch a DVD on my pc

Take your choice of several:

Google for RealAlternative .. or
QTimeAlternative .. or
FusionSoft DVD Player ... or
Freeware DVD Player (yep, that's the name)
 
Your best choice would be Coda codec pack (contains MPEG2 decoder needed for
DVD playback) and Media player classic.

In fact, I just finished watching the DVD version of "The Good, The Bad
and The Ugly" on my computer using that exact combination. Even used
subtitles.
