Is there any good free software for playing commercially available dvd's
out there?

I thought Windows Media Player was free, but apparently not, so I am
informed.

TIA.

VLC. I prefer it over MPC for this kind of video

Hi Bubba,

I own and use both VideoLan and Media Player Classic (with K-Lite Mega
Codec pack 1.51). The truth is that I have not yet played a DVD-movie
using my computer (we have a TV unit that plays DVD's) but my Registry
Editor tells me that MPC would play DVD's by default.

I assume that you have played DVD's using both VLC and MPC, and that
you have compared the two players and you prefer VLC. Why do you prefer
VLC over MPC? (I haven't used either one to play a DVD-movie so your
opinion is valuable to me before I insert a DVD!)

Thanks!

Hiya...not sure my opinion is worth a hill of beans here but here I go
anyhow...

I use MPC extensively on several systems but it has always seemed a bit
clunky to me when playing DVD's. Menus don't always seem to render
correctly and quite honestly, I like the interface for VLC (I use both the
original and the iTunes skins) more. The scalability of VLC works great
on my laptops (both PC and Mac).

And, interestingly, when I needed a DVD player for my work system, I
didn't want to download the codec packs so I decided to try VLC and d/l'ed
the zip (no install needed) version. I unzipped it, popped in a DVD, and
it ran perfectly. From then on, I was sold.

FWIW...

Bubba
