DVD codecs

Is there a free DVD codec that will enable me to play VOB diles in
Windows Media Player version 9? I know there are other programs that
can play these files (e.g., medial player classic) but I was wondering
about a codec for windows media player. Also, if there is a freeware
solution that would allow me to import these files to Windows Movie
Maker, that would be ideal. I bought a Sony HandyCam that records
directly on DVD but it did not come with software and the dvd does not
work with Windows Media Player (getting message about missing codec).
Any help greatly appreciated...

VOB files are actually MPG/MPEG, so you may be able to get some players
to play them simply by changing the file extension. You can also use
the freeware media player, VideoLAN to play them.

...And BSD player, -if they are not encrypted, but the goal was to
view them with WMp :) . My friend put simply a DVD in the drive
(on XP) and the film starts, while on win ME, with the latest
WMP (or almost, the 9) and windows codecs pack installed
i can't view a dvd (with wmp)

You need a player that supports DVDs, you don't just play vob file, there
are more filter involved. That's why you need a DVD player, such as Media
Player Classic
