DVD not recognized

I have an HP Pavilio ze4500 laptop with a Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-R2312 installed.
I've got Windows XP Home Edition with SP2.

I'm having trouble with my DVD-ROM drive. The device works fine except the
drive cannot recognize certain DVDs. I recently got a DVD from Netflix and
when I put it in the drive, there is a lot of clicking and whirring, but
nothing happens. When I look in "My Computer" there is no disc showing for
the drive, and when I click on the drive, it's blank - in other words, its as
if there were no disc in the drive. The drive plays most DVDs fine, and the
disc works in a regular DVD player hooked up to a TV. There are no error
messages or anything, just a failure to register the presence of a disc. What
could be happening?

It is a firmware issue.
In device manager, identify make and model of the drive,
and version of installed firmware.
Visit that manufacturers site and download and install the
latest firmware version for that specific drive.
Updating firmware is known as "flashing" and you must
follow exactly the instructions for your specific drive.
