DVD not recognising discs

Hi, my first question (and probably not my last)! to the board.
Please accept my apologies if this issue has already been covered.

I have a laptop with an integrated cd/dvd rw combo. I have in the past
sucessfully played and burnt both music and films with no issue.

Last month, i tried to play a cd and nothing happened. On checking this out,
I noticed there were warning notices next to the dvd and cd enteries in "my
computer", and both drives had disappeared. I tried updating the drivers, as
advised by microsof'ts knoweledge base, but when doing this i was prompted
with: "There are no more updated drives - the most updated driver is
installed".

The drives have since appeared out of no where !! (Hoorah)!!.... but... no
dvd will play, if you put the disc in the machine, it just makes a whirring
sound and makes a clicking noise... as if it is trying to read the
information - And if you take out the disc it is incredibly hot. I have tried
playing an audio cd and this seems to play, all be it - the music sounds a
little slow.. (but mayb this is me being paranoid)!!

On checking my computer's properties for both drives, it tells me everything
is ok. My pc is very well looked after and has all the latest patches, etc
installed.

Can anyone please advise me of how to fix this issue and what the problem
might be?

Thanks,

GQ

Well I tried everything I could come up with and the last straw before
replacing the DVD drive in my desktop PC was when I changed the DVD
drive in the BIOS to be the bootup device and Windows wouldn't read
it. I just installed a replacement and it works! So the optical
reader must have gone bad on my just two month old Lacie DVD drive!

Paul, if I remember correctly, I think I mentioned something like... Try the
drive in another computer, before you toss it.. I am glad you have a new DVD
drive and your proof positive.. It was coved under warranty, I hope..? They
usually are rated at around 15,000 hours or so, give or take..

Keep up to date, and thanks for letting me know your problem was solved..
