DVD movies to hard drive.

I have some movies I'd like to put on my hard drive. Those are commercial
(Hollywood) movies that I have bought in Best Buy, Circuit City etc.
How can I get a movie with audio etc. from a DVD to my hard drive.
Obviously the first thing I tried was to copy the contents of a DVD in a
folder but got a lot of files none of which work when I click on them.
I wanted to do this because I'd like to be able to watch movies while I
travel and don't want to scratch my DVD's.

I don't have a DVD writeable drive. Only DVD player and a CD writeable.

you may need the appropriate software. some do not allow this feature you
request unless ya pay. have a look and see these few that i use
INTERACTUAL WINDVD 5, Cyberlink powerDVD and also SHOWSHIFTER the last i
know can play from HD if you have a Payd lisence serial, the rest I have not
checked out seing that I only have 10gigs, there is NO point in me storing
dvds. GOOD LUCK AND GOOD WATCHING.
