So from what i have gathered there are alot of people that are having trouble
with dvd maker, specificly at the menu layout screen. One reason i have heard
is that nero installs an audio codec that will mess stuff up, but this is not
the case for me, i have not even installed it on vista yet. I have installed
a codec pack to be able to watch divx and a few other common formatts that
arnt supported from a clean windows install. If this is actually the problem,
am i then stuck with the choice of being able to watch all my video clips OR
burn dvds with windows dvd maker, but not both? if any one has some solid
input it would be greatly appreciated...

Most codec packs are collections of pirated software, and some come with
multiple viruses.

Anyway Movie Maker (and it appears DVD is similar as it's installed in Movie
Maker's folder) lets you choose what codec to use/not use in Tools -
Options - Compatability

Thanks, Mr. Dot (all I see is a dot in the from column, so I think of you as
Mr. Dot) ... I had no idea that most codec packs are from pirated stuff ...
I have seen warnings in the past that they were 'no good' but thought that
just meant they didn't work very well ... just deleted a bunch of off topic
stuff I just thought of ... but thanks for the warning ...

There's nothing a codec pack can offer you that you cannot obtain
individually. You are much better suited to obtain the individual codec as
you need it from the vendor. Some codec packs, for example, contain older
versions of codecs that may not be the Vista-compatible version (if one
exists).

If you do need a specific codec for playback, it's usually best to directly
get the latest version of that from the vendor. Codec packs just aren't
worth the headache. =\
