I did the ''anytime upgrade'' from Home Premium to Ultimate via Staples. All
went well except I had to uninstall/reinstall Creative Audigy 2 ZS drivers.
Sound is now fine.
I followed Conor's advice in another post, d/l Belarc Advisor, and now have
the Ultimate key.

AFAIK I can use the Ultimate key and the Home Premium Full Version DVD I
purchased to reinstall Ultimate if ever need be.

Am I right? Or do I need something else? Thought I'd ask so I am prepared
if/when I have to reinstall. TIA

Yup. It's as simple as that. You can use any valid product key on any
retail version of Vista. All the DVDs have the same content (even though
they are boxed and labeled differently - that's why the "anytime
upgrade" works).

So, 1 Home Premium DVD + Original Product Key, plus new Ultimate Product
Key = 1 install of each

What is the cost for the upgrade? I bought a copy of Ultimate and am
going to do the family deal to get 2 additional copies of Home
Premium. Can I upgrade those to Ultimate?

It's an upgrade key, so it'll be expected to run from an installed OS.
You can clean install with a bit of messing around. Ju st enter no CD
Key the first time you install, selecting at least Home Premium then
once it's installed run Setup again from within Windows and this time
enter your Ultimate Upgrade CD Key.
