DVD Encoder question

I am trying to burn a movie on to a 4.7GB DVD. The movie is ruffly 3.5GB in
size 640 x 272 . The InterVideo MPEG Video Encoder is being used by the DVD
Authoring program . Also I have tried using Ulead VideoStudio 9 and now using
WinDVD Creator.

Is there a free DVD encoder that has superb quality and awesome compression ?

I would like to fit the movie all on to 1 DVD

Thanks

FWIW...DVDs are are based on the length
of the movie...not the file size. The software
that burns the DVD will do the necessary
conversion.

One side of a single layer DVD is good for
up to 1 hour of video. Some programs have
an option to fit the movie to the disk but I'm
not sure which one you need to use. And...
maybe your video file is in the wrong format....
for example...some authoring software is not
compatible with .wmv or .avi files.

So when creating a DVD. It's always dependant on the minutes not size?

My file is in Divx avi format. Both Ulead VideoStudio & WinDVD work with
the file. For example WinDVD uses the InterVideo MPEG Video Encoder to
convert video to DVD complaint format. My thinking was if I could render the
movie well below the max limit of 4.7 GB it could write it as a DVD. From
what gathering I am way off on that one. It's the minutes thing that is the
curve ball.

Interesting

Thanks John !

Its around 9 hours of video. lol ... In its DivX format the size is 3.5 GB. I
could always like you mentioned use double layer single sided DVD 8.5 GB in
size and 4 hours of video permitted.

Just finished reading the Sony site about the Blu Ray Disc that holds 50
Gigs of data and could hold around 46 hours of standard television video.

Here is the Sony Blu Ray Disc page

Would you need a compatible burner to use Blu Ray ?
