DVD driver disabled

I have Windows XP. My dvd burning and playing software programs state, No
disc writer device found. Under Device Manager, my DVD/CD-ROM driver
Matshita DVD-RAM LF-D311, says that this device is disabled. When I tried to
enable it with my Driver Restoration CD loaded, and without, it said, Windows
was not able to enable this device; tried to update, it said, No better match
for software was found. I looked up the Matshita name online and did not
fine downloads for a new driver. I don't know what to do? how to enable
this?? Thank you

Goto http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpcd.php#problems
See the second "problem" (read the caveats)
Run the provided registry patch

That should fix your problem (basically, a filter driver is missing or
non-operational, the registry patch will delete the filter drivers
references for your cdrom(s))

Basically, the reg file from above carries out the steps displayed at this
website

CD-ROM Drive or DVD-ROM Drive Missing After You Install Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;320553

CD-ROM Access Is Missing and Messages Cite Error Code 31, Code 32, Code 19,
or Code 39 After You Remove Easy CD Creator in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;314060

(It'll fix code 41 errors too as per the contents of the last kb article)

Thank you. I ran the registry patch, rebooted, and now when my desktop opens
I have a message: Driver CDR4_2K.sys is old. Please reinstall DirectCD to
update this driver. I have a Gateway, Windows XP, year 2002. I found Direct
CD under Roxio, reloaded Roxio with my applications restore disc but continue
to have the error message.
Really appreciate your help.

Your best bet is to uninstall Roxio's DirectCD and then run the provided
registry patch.

Then you should get a version of DirectCD (if you need it) that is much more
current (i.e. one that is designed to run with current versions of Windows
XP with SP2).

Thank you. I'll uninstall DirectCD and then re run the patch. Then
hopefully ?? my driver should be functional? and allow me to record and play

No, not that I am ever aware of. When I did a search for Direct CD it pulled
about 10 items all saying DirectCD (format utility, help, .exe, most all in
C:\Program Files\Roxio\ Easy CD Creator 5; there is one in a
C:\Windows\Prefetch). When I try to open a few of these, it gives me the
Driver old, reinstall Direct CD message again. I have never used any of
these. Do I right click and delete all? What does this program, that I am
about to delete do? Will I no longer need it? Mostly, we use our computer
for photos, video, internet, Word, occasionally recording music for videos.
I just don't want to delete something that will mess up my operating system
(I've done this before).
Thanks
Audrey

I suppose I might use Roxio Easy CD 5 Creator at some point, but in the 3
years we've had our computer, I never have (this would definitely uninstall
Direct CD, right?). Would this affect recording to or playing on our DVD or
CD drives? I could always re install it, but would probably then have this
driver problem.

I deleted Roxio, tried to run the patch again and "run" was not an option. I
think it might already be saved on my computer. Driver still does not work???

You will need to apply the cdgone.reg patch (that Jason mentioned earlier) by
right clicking the .reg files properties, click merge and reboot the computer
then reinstall your original Roxio software (reboot may be required), then
update (free) your original version, see link below..
Update your version ?? of Roxio here.. Or upgrade (not free) if necessary..

A good read on burning CD/DVD's in XP, see link..

Hope this can help..
