DVD drive won't read cd

My DVD-ROM won't read a mapping cd I use for my GPS. It plays music cd's and
DVD's just fine in Media Player. I recently upgraded this laptop to XP pro.
The map cd works just fine on my XP desktop.

I assume there is some sort of application connected to the mapping CD. If
yes, it's likely installed on the desktop, is the mapping application also
installed on your laptop?

The only way I was able to install the application on the laptop was to copy
the install files to a flash drive since I couldn't install it with the disk
(won't read it). The typical installation for the application is to run the
maps from the cd to save disk space. Even though I've got the program
installed on the laptop, it still won't read the cd. Hope that adequately
explains it.

Unless, it's a fully contained application that runs from an exe with no
setup required, the application is likely not properly installed on the
laptop and is probably the source of the issue. In other words, regardless
of what you copied, if this application had a setup or installation routine,
even if it doesn't install all files in order to save disk space, that
routine is required to properly install and register the application.

Mystery solved. It's not the DVD drive, it's not the program, it's the media.
One of our IM people said that some discs (i.e. older) won't run in laptop
drives but will run in desktop drives. I burned to a blank disc and now it
works fine.
