DVD drive spins, but doesn't recognize disk

When I insert a disk (music CD, DVD, computer CD) into my DVD drive, the
light goes on, it spins for a while, but eventually stops without
recognizing the disk. In Windows Explorer (for example), I click on the
drive and it says "Please insert a disk in drive D:".

Any chance this is software-related? If so, thoughts on fixing it?

Is it just one disc in particular or ANYTHING you throw at it? If it's just
one disc or one brand of disc, it is probably the disc, but if just about
everything you try it won't read, you might want to try buying a CD ROM that
cleans your CD drive's lense or lastly, you MIGHT be having a CD drive that
is going bad.
