DVD Drive not working...Help!!!

I am using Windows XP and for the last 2 weeks my DVD drive has not been
working. It does not read CD's, DVD's or any disk inserted into the drive.
The light flashes on the drives external tray and I can sometimes hear the
disk clicking and spinning but nothing happens. I have a Sony VAIO PCG-FRV
notebook. I went to device manager and the drive is listed as "working
properly". In addition, I have NOT received any error messages as indicated
from some of the other posts in XP newsgroups. I ran the "guided assitance"
feature from another microsoft link and it stated there was not a problem.
Previously, I had contracted a virus on my harddrive and reinstalled my
entire operating system through Best Buy's Geek Squad. They removed
EVERYTHING and only reinstalled windows XP. Is it possible I have a defective
driver? Their installation was insufficient? or I have a defective laptop?
Please help....thank you in advance

Go to Start > Run and type in: devmgmt.msc
and press the Enter key. After the Device Manager
window opens, scroll down to your DVD/CD-ROM
drive, click the "+" to expand, then right-click on
your DVD/CD Drive and select Uninstall. You will
be prompted to reboot your computer, so reboot
and Windows XP will reinstall the CD Drive.

Thanks for the assistance Mr. Frisch. However, after right clicking the DVD
drive, I was not prompted to reboot. Nevertheless, I restarted the computer.
When the computer came back on it recognized the DVD drive as being a "new
software" in the icon window in the lower right corner of the screen. Still,
the DVD drive is not working properly though a light does come on when a disk
is inside of the tray. I can hear the laptop attempting to read the disk then
abruptly stopping. It is listed as a MATSHITA-UJ810. Is there any other
method you feel will alleviate this problem? Where do I go from here?

And what did Sony do to fix the problem? It's obviously still under
warranty. Haven't you looked into getting Sony to fix it?

I got my DVD drive to work. I tried uninstalling and then reinstalling the
drive as indictade by Mr. Frisch. Initially, that wasn't sufficient enough.
But after I downloaded several upgrades to both Microsoft Windows and Windows
Media player plus doing the "uninstall" sequence that Mr. Frisch advised
afterwards, my DVD drive began to work. I downloaded EVERYTHING from
microsoft update, and deleted space to make room for the files. My drive is
working properly now. I would advise anyone else with this problem to
download all the updates because somewhere in those updates was an upgrade
which allowed my DVD drive to recognize windows media player after I
"re-installed" the drive.

I want to personally thank Carey Frisch for his advice and expertise. I
wouldn't have solved this dilemma without you. Thanks!!
