When I place DVD disc in the drive it wont work. In Device Manager it is
recogonised as DVD drive and there is no conflict showing. Can anyone help me

It sounds like the person who installed it didn't install the drivers.
The DVD drive should have come with a CD. In addition to the drivers you
will need a player application to play movies. Sometimes the player
application is included with the drive too, and MAY be on the CD with
the drivers.

Thank you for your swift reply. However, when I purchased the computer new,
everything was installed and working including the movie player software
which came with it. When I place a DVD disc into the drive and try to play it
via "Power DVD" programme, it simply says "no disc in D drive". Do you think
the problem might be a software issue?

An easy way to tell if it is a hardware issue or a software issue is to
boot with Knoppix, a Linux distro that runs from CD. If everything
works well in Linux, you'll know it is a Windows issue. If you can't
read a DVD in Linux, replace the drive.

Alternately, swap the drive out for a known-working one and see what
happens in Windows.

To get Knoppix, you need a computer with a fast Internet connection and
third-party burning software. Download the Knoppix .iso from
www.knoppix.net and create your bootable cd. Then boot with it. Note
that the default mouse action in the window manager used by Knoppix
(KDE) is a single click to open instead of the traditional MS Windows'
double-click.
