DVD drive letter--none

Had a laptop for 2 months and installed from cd many programs when I first
got it. Just noticed today that my cd/dvd drive was not shown in Explore.
It shows in device manager and Disk manager. When I try to manually assign a
drive letter in disk manager, the drive letter flashes in the drive area on
the right pane but instantly goes away. Have tried scanning for
virus/spyware, uninstalling the drive in device manager--nothing has worked.

Anything else I can try ??

did you just install itunes ??? the itunes burning engine is not fully
compatible yet, and will conflict with some burners, causing them to
"disappear". There is a registry hack to get your burners back, but it
disabled burning from within itunes. Sorry I don't have the link right now,
but google should help.

Nope, no iTunes installed. Found some hits on Google but nothing seems to
apply to my situation. Any other ideas ??
