DVD drive freezing computer

I have a Toshiba Satellite A135-S2276. It came with Vista Basic which I
dumped within the week. I installed XP Pro and managed to find all necessary
drivers. My problem is with the Matshita UJ-850S DVD/RW CD/RW. When I put a
cd/dvd in it freezes the computer. I have to do a hard reboot in order to do
anything. It does not matter what kind of disc. Once I restart the computer
it recognizes the disc and I can do whatever I need to. As long as I keep
the disk in the drive I can access it whenever I need it.
This computer came with Vista and there are no drivers on the Toshiba site
for XP. I've heard that the dvd drive doesn't need drivers in Windows
because the OS should support everything, so I don't know where to start
looking.

You purchased from a large OEM, which will doubtless have there own designed
hw & drivers, eg mobo chipset, you are now using win default drivers - it
will probably never work reliably unless Tosh produce winxp chipset drivers.
In all probability you have also invalidated any warranty

Is it possible that someone has "made" there way around this and found
something that worked. I ask this because I was able to find fixes for
everything else throughout the web.
This is not a big deal as I have found ways to help deal with this issue. I
just wondered if anyone had any ideas. As for the warranty, I wasn't worried
about it since I knew I would upgrade to XP.

If you are prepaired to store / work with your data on a sys that uses
workarounds for drivers so be it.
PS If you intended to use winxp why not buy a sys in which it is fully
supported, there are many from Tosh.

I am prepared to work with my system this way. In fact I have been doing it
for quite some time now. I was not aware that Toshiba would not offer
support for XP until after I had it.
I hope that instead of worrying about what I am doing somebody would pay
attention to the actual question that I put out there. I have no other
problems with the system as it is. I just wonder where I would look to try
to fix the problem. I do no know if it is a driver issue or if I need to
look elswhere.

Adding burning software, can conflict with the normal drivers. I even
had a DVD burner that got upset whenever a virtual CD application was
running (that mounts an ISO and looks like a CD is present). In that
case, a attempted burn would result in a freeze of the drive after 30
seconds. Removing the virtual CD software brought immediate relied.

I might examine the software being used, for potential conflicts.

club.cdfreaks.com and www.cdrinfo.com/forum/ are examples of forums
that specialize in optical devices. Using the following search engine,
you can specify a domain like "cdfreaks.com" and search for your
drive. That is how I found the example thread above.

thanks for this info. I do have alcohol installed but haven't noticed these
problems. I tried their advice anyway and still got no results. So no fix
yet.

thanks for your help
