DVD drive disappeared

If the drive does not show up in Device Manager, check the POST screens
during start-up or go into BIOS set-up mode to see if the drive shows there.
If it doesn't show during BIOS or POST, then the drive is likely defective
and needs replacement.

Well, when writing the above I got the genius idea of restoring the MBR
(to a "windows one"), so I booted into PE and ran BootSect. I can now
definitely say that my theory is correct; the CD/DVD-drive reappeared
with drive-letter and all. Can someone please tell me why the heck is
going on because this is somthing I have never seen with any other OS?

As far as I remember none of the posts on the missing DVD drive problem
mention that it is quite recent (as far as I'm aware). What has changed
recently?

I hope they fix it, because I'm not willing to pay yet more money for the
successor to this defective OS.

What does support for the boot manager say about this problem being caused
by their software? Whatever its doing, it's blocking the system BIOS from
properly reporting the optical drive to Windows.
