If it is a dvd all-in-one (dvdrw, cdrw) then you cannot use the Windows cd
writer functions. It is not supported and you will need to use a third
party program such as Nero 6.

You don't indicate if this is a DVD burner, or a DVD-ROM, which is
to say, whether it creates DVDs, or only reads DVDs. You also
don't say whether it refuses to play both DVDs and CDs, or only CDs.

If you could play DVD movies at one time, it must be hooked up
correctly and recognized by your BIOS and by Windows, or at least
have been hooked up correctly.

Try putting a music CD in, and opening Media Player. Try clicking
on the Playlist button to open the list, then double click on the
entry for your drive, if a disk is recognized in the drive by
Media Player, as it should be. Try the Play/Pause menu button,
also, under Play.

If you can play a CD, you will know that the drive is still
connected properly. It may be that you only need to install some
DVD movie playing software, such as Power DVD.
