DVD/CDRW combo can't read files

My DVD/CDRW combo drive will not recognize CDs. I place CDRs and
manufacturer CDs in the drive, but when I click on the drive to view
the files...nothing. Autoplay also does not work. I can view the same
CDs on a different computer.

It is a Dell Precision M50 Mobile Workstation.

Any suggestions?

It's the original HDLC-4240 drive by Hitachi. I already swapped it out
with another and the same problem occurs. I tried to flash the driver,
but no difference.

Having the same problem with a drive from a compaq nx9005

problem happened overnight.

I had the same problem with two different computers. Both were using a
housebrand version of Win XP (one Dell, one eMachines). If your situation is
the same that I had, it starts out with one CDROM and then eventually with
all CDROM drives in the system.

Your choice is to reinstall the housebrand XP operating system and then wait
for it to happen again - and it will. Or, buy a fresh copy of XP and install
that. That is what I did and the problem disappeared completely.

I've been running this latest install for nearly a year with nary a problem.
The longest that I could go with the house mangled versions of XP was two or
three months, then the CDROM drives would drop out, one at a time.
