Yes, with smokers.

Then that isnt your problem.

Wouldnt hurt to try cleaning the lense, but it isnt likely to help if you arent a smoker.

Its not possible to clean a Smoke Damaged Laser Assembly, as it get on
more parts that you can get at, like the Mirror and the bottom of the
Lens.

I should know as I fixed many CD/DVD Players..

Smokers even kill TV's

Bob:

Are you suggesting that a simple lens cleaning might restore errant
devices? I don't have smoke, but I do have dust, and a "test" device
causing issues right now (the subject to be replaced) that I could run
a pilot on.

The Dust gets on to many parts, and it time stick like glue, you have to
use cotton buds and Isopropyl to clean some of the parts, but hard to
clean underneath the lens.

Its not die so much with smokers, the smoke just
coats the lense eventually and can be cleaned off.

No you Can't as it gets into every thing..

The problem aint damage, its just a film of the smoke residue on
the lens and its perfectly possible to get that off with isopropanol.

It doesnt matter unless its in the optical path unless the levels are very bad.

Not very often.

No it doesnt if its not a smoker's system.

It doesnt cause any real problem underneath the lens as long as it isnt
a smoker's system and isnt used in very high humidity enviroments.

The voltage levels arent high enough to be a problem in a DVD drive.

However, my point was more that my 2-3 year old drives are still on par
with modern CDR/DVDR drives, there's no advancements that make them
worth replacing other than Bluray (which I don't really look at as an
"advancement" on current drives, as much as a new format entirely)

The only issue is need for updated firmware to do better burns on newer
blank DVD media. As the market settles down I suppose there are going to
be fewer and fewer variations to cope with. For instance, though, I have an
Optiarc laptop-size DVD burner from 2006 that won;t make reliable burns on
the newer Ritek media that many companies are branding as their own these
days. The MID isn't in it's table, so it defaults to a 4X generic burning
strategy thet produces horrific quality recordings on that media. No
firmware updates available so replacing it may be an option.

I have proven many times you just don't know a Thing, I have been a
Electronic Eng and Technician for some 30 years and more you just don't
know a thing how a CD/DVD laser system works..

Another person that just don't know a Thing I have serviced them for
some 10 years and more and know what I am taking about.

Some one else that does not know a Thing, have you serviced them for say
10 years, from your comment I don't think so..

Like hell you have.
I have been a Electronic Eng and Technician for some 30 years

I have been for a hell of a lot longer than that thanks.
and more you just don't know a thing how a CD/DVD laser system works..

Easy to claim. Have fun actually substantiating that claim.

You can't even manage to work out how to capitalise properly.

So stupid it can't even work out that all three posts you are replying to are from the same individual.

Likely since before you were even born, thanks.
from your comment I don't think so..

Not a shred of evidence that you are actually capable of thought.

Have fun explaining why the PCs of smokers work fine.

It's only the optical drives that don't work fine.

Frank, due to his ungratiousness, most of us have Rod filtered out.

It's a delightful group that way.

You'll get to pick his nursing home if it doesnt get him first.
Oh, he passed away three years ago and not from smoking either so it
never "got" him. Pneumonia did though.

I've got a couple LGs here that have warranty stickers from 2006, and
the one I got rid of to buy one of these was probably two years older
and is still going.

Antidotal, but I'd buy LG again.

An "antidote" is a cure for poison, whereas "antidotal" is a nonexistent
word. I'm sure you meant "anecdotal" - the adjective form of "anecdote"
(which means, "brief story").

Just a clarification, not an attack.

Although, a good DVD "burner" might happen to be an "antidote" for a
bad one. Personally, I'm moving away from LG Electronics and heading
to Lite-On, in upgrading my current home-built computer (an aging
Pentium III 1050MHz).

That isn't a knock against LG, it's simply a matter of circumstances.
I made a pretty good deal on a Lite-On "GSA-4120B" Blu-ray writer,
(intended for my future assembling of an Intel "Quad Core" PC), a
couple of years ago.

Since then, I've been leaning toward Lite-On, which seems to garner
as many favorable customer reviews as most any brand.
