DVD/CD RW and XP question

I recently purchased the Sony DRX 720UL-T DVD/CD RW external Drive. It is on
a USB hub. It has worked once and when it did it took about 30 minutes to
burn a CD. MSXP PRO does not recognize it as a RW drive. I had to set the
registry value to make it writable (MS KB article) but it changes back with
every hardware scan. Any one have any ideas of what I am doing wrong? I am
curious why MS XP has such a problem with burning DVD/CD''s? Sony is no help
except to advise me to down load latest versions of Nero and INCD and then
reinstall. Which I did and it resolved nothing. I have used FUJI and Memorex
Cs's. I think I wasted a couple of hundred bucks...
I will appreciate any ideas.

Possibly:

or: http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpcd.php

Hope this helps.

By the way, Sony was right. If you plan on doing any but very casual CD
burning, you need something other than the XP built-in CD burning software.
The XP CD burning software is right in there with the XP Fax software as a
package that just barely works.

For free CD burning software, see: http://www.burnatonce.com/downloads/
