DVD/CD-rom drive "disappears" while reading a CD

Ed

When I load one particular CD into my drive, it fails to read it and
after a few seconds the drive "disappears" from my system. To get it
back, I have to reboot. The error log gives the following messages:

- warning: An error was detected on device \Device\CdRom0 during a
paging operation.

- Error The device, \Device\Ide\IdePort1, did not respond within the
timeout period.

- Error The device 'HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GWA-4040N'
(IDE\CdRomHL-DT-ST_DVD-RW_GWA-4040N_______________1.01____\5&e1ce51&0&0.0.0)
disappeared from the system without first being prepared for removal.

Other CDs appear to work ok. I assumed it was a faulty CD and
requested another copy of the CD from the supplier. They have send me
another copy which they assures me has been checked. It still fails on
my PC.

Any suggestions?

Hi Ed,

Does it work in a different CD drive?

Hi Ed,

Yes, the CD reads successfully in another DVD/CD drive on a Windows 98
system. I've then attached a (second) CD-drive to the original (XP)
machine and, here again, the CD reads successfully.

I don't know if it makes a difference but there is a difference
between the drive specs. The drive where it fails is a combo CD / DVD
RW. The Win 98 machine is a plain DVD/CD. The second device attached
to the original (XP) machine is a plain CD reader.

So it's the combo DVD/CD RW on the XP machine where this particular CD
fails, while it reads on the other devices. However the CD / DVD RW
combo has previously successfully read and written CDs / DVDs without
any difficulty. It appears to still do this on other media and it's
only the one particular CD that's causing this serious failure. I
presume the XP software drivers for a plain CD are different to a
combo CD / DVD RW?

Hi Ed,

Well, everything you are telling me puts the blame on the drive, not the
disk. Try running a cleaner disk through it, but otherwise there may not be
much you can do. Perhaps a firmware update may be in order.

I have a CD cleaner disk. Is that the same as DVD cleaner, or is there
a specific product to cater for DVD?
