DVD/CD-R Problems

I have a sony vaio fx-340, I can play DVD's but it won't play audio or
software CD's. any ideas what the problem is?
 
Steve, it's possible that the CD lense of the drive is shot or dirty. You
could try a cd lense cleaner.
 
I can play DVD's so I guess the lense isn't dirty? The CD-R does use the same
lense as the DVD doesn't it?
 
Nope. They use different lenses.

Although I only see one lense, I guess the other one must be internal?
I'll give it try and let you know how it goes. I'm not gonna hold my breath
though : )
