dvd/cd-r drive works for DVD's but not for music or data

i can watch dvd's but it does not detect music cd's or data cd's or
software.....i have a laptop ...can anyone help me out????????

Combo drives use two separate lasers for CDs and DVDs. You can try a
drive cleaner, but probably your drive will need to be replaced.
Contact the laptop mftr.'s tech support.
