DVD burner and CD burner stopped working

Both my DVD and CD players in my computer stopped working about 3 weeks ago.
In device manager I have the yellow and black exclamtion point with the error
"Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be
corrupted or missing" - (Code 39). I tried changing out the cable connecting
the two devices to the motherboard. I installed a new dvd burner that I had
on the shelf. Neither one of these fixed the issue. I then found some
forums that recommended deleting the low and high filters out of the registry
and then re-booting. This did not work. I am still getting the error next
to the devices. Also, the low and high filters did not get re-installed into
the registry. The devices look normal under the bios. I don't know where to
go from here. Any ideas?? I am running XP home edition on a pentium 4. The
registry fix seemed to be the right answer, but it didn't work. Thanks for
any advice you can give me.

Boot into Safe Mode, open Device Manager, delete/remove any and all CD/DVD
drives you find, reboot and Windows will re-detect the hardware and install
the drivers.

Why boot into Safe Mode first instead of just opening Device Manager and
uninstalling the devices???

I already uninstalled the devices in device manager and tried re-booting.
The devices showed back up with the same error. Is there a difference
booting into safe mode as opposed to just opening device manager like Jerry
said. I'll try it anyway and let you know what happens

I uninstalled the devices in device manager in safe mode. It made no
difference compared to when I deleted the devices in regular mode in device
manager. When the computer reboots, it detects both devices, but then a
window comes up for both with error 39 saying that it cannot start the
devices because it cannot load the drivers. Help!!

Hello GMEngr,

First, locate the model numbers of your drives. then try to locate the
websites of the manufacturers of your cd/dvd drives and see if they have a
place to download the latest or updated firmware for your drives.
Instructions should also be available on how to update your firmware. Follow
those instructions exactly as given.

As an example, you can go to the Lite-On It corporation's website. They make
optical drives. their link is as follows:

At this site, you can find the latest manual, firmware and other necessary
downloads for a cd/dvd drive made by Lite-On.

Or you can google the manufacturer of your cd/dvd drive to find their
website.

To get more help from members of this forum, it might be a good idea to post
the brand and operating system of your computer as well as the brand and
model numbers to your cd/dvd drives. It might be a good idea also to let us
know how old your system is.

My DVD Burner is an I/O Magic 16x DVD +/- RW/+/-R, model no. IDVD16DD. When
I looked it up on the I/O magic website it told me that it did not have a
driver. My CD Burner is a KHypermedia Atapi 52x24x52. The model no. is
KHCRW522452. There is also no driver for this device. Windows XP home
edition should be able to handle both with their default drivers according to
both manufacturers websites. I am running XP home edition version 5.1
service pack 3. My PC was built by PC warehouse that has since gone out of
business. I've got an Intel Pentium 4, 2.4 GHz processor with an Intel
D865PERL motherboard, 512 MB of ram. The computer is about 5 years old and
still running strong. I just replaced the power supply for the first time
last month. Hopefully someone can come up with a brainstorm for me on this
one. Thanks.

Thanks for the info GMEngr,

Appearantly neither Iomega nor KHypermedia provide Firmware updates. That
is unfortunate since it is the Firmware that tells the dvd/cd drive what
types and brands of cds and dvds to recognize. That is why you may be able
to write and read all maxell made dvds and cds, but not most memorex or vica
versa.

I have searched around other help sites for anyone having the same problem
as you are having but have found nothing of value I could offer beyond
updating your firmware, but even that may not be your problem.

If you are comfortable with navigationg through your CMOS reboot and press
the delete key on your keyboard to get to your cmos. Navigate through the
pages until you find the page that gives you a choice to let the bios choose
your IRQ settings or to let windows choose them. I think the line for this
says "Plug n play OS?" or something like that. If it says "yes", change it
to "No". Save and reboot and see if that fixes your problem.

I hope this helps.

I'll keep looking for more ways to help you solve this issue, but for now I
have to go fix my brother's computer. His cdrom drive is recognized but
won't read, so I am just gonna switch it out.

You boot into Safe Mode as that will also show any hidden or ghost drives
that are not shown when you boot normally.

I went into the bios like you said and found the plug and play selection
under boot. It was set to "No" already. I changed it to "yes" and re-booted
and had the same problem. I then changed it back to "no" and re-booted and
had the same problem. Any other ideas?? Thanks for working with me on this.

I am sorry I didn't get back to you sooner GMEngr. I have been sick.

I am sorry. I can't think of any other ideas. Are your jumpers for
slave/master/cable select settings set?

Do you have any other drive set up on the same IDE connector? If so, make
sure one of them is set to master and the other to slave.

I hope this helps. And I will continue to search for other possible
solutions. I'll try to be quicker this time.
