DVD and CD burning SLOW in Vista

Hello,

Back when I was primarily using XP as my main computer, very rarely did I
run into any problems burning CDs or DVDs. Yeah, I'd get into a jam here or
there, but nothing I couldn't deal with on my own.

But with Vista, it's a nightmare. Vista is very picky about what disks I
burn, how they are formatted, how many times I can write to them, etc.
Granted, I haven't done a great deal of heavy research trying to figure out
what is what, but it just seemed that with XP, everything was more USER
FRIENDLY.

Vista makes me format disks before I use them, which takes a very long time,
and then after they're formatted, it takes even longer to burn them. A DVD
that used to take me 20 minutes to burn (using XP and third-party software)
now takes me several hours!

Has anybody here experienced any of this? Anyone know of any links that I
can get to to help me out?

Thanks in advance,

smackedass

Was Vista an upgrade or is this a new PC?
If upgrade did you update your dvd driver to a Vista compatable driver.
If not, you need to update drivers

Thank you for responding. It is a brand new Dell Inspiron E1505. The most
recent disappointment was, just last night I went to burn a 3.6 GB folder to
a DVD RW disk, the time remaining notification varied between 7 hours and 11
days; I woke up this morning, and I got a message stating that the media was
not writable. This leads me to believe that either the hardware might not
be working properly, or I am in sore need of time to research this mess. I
would expect that Vista would make such a task easier, rather than harder.

I need to know which application you are performing these actions with?
Are you using the a MS product or a 3rd party program ie: Nero NTI, etc.
Which version Vista: Basic, Home Premium, etc.
If you are using MS, it is better/faster (normally) to do it with a 3rd
party application.

Windows Explorer. What, Microsoft doesn't have the best product? ;)

What program are you using to burn

Nope, certainly not. It has *a* burning product with minimal features
designed to give basic burning functionality. For a full featured burning
product, you'd need to purchase a third party tool.

Unfortunately, 3rd party is the way to go, there are some free one's. (Google
search), but I do not know how good they are!!!!!

I guess you didn't catch my tongue-in-cheek response, punctuated by a ;)

I kind of suspected that I could try Roxio or Nero or something like that,
but I am still astonished that MS hasn't implemented something just a little
bit effective...

I did really, yes MS has only installed a very basic app., they do not give
away much for nothing.
Otherwise they would put 3rd party software out of business.
A lot of the open source material runs very good, with most being Vista
compatable.
I am in no way anti MS, I just like things work

I have found the same to be true in Vista Premium thus far, both in using the
"Windows DVD Maker," included with the Vista, as well as with Nero 7. Found
this out after my sad foray into using the Transfer cable w/ the Windows
"Easy" software - and my even sadder mistake of drawing the attention of the
person I did when posting my request for assistance here.

Still haven't been able to find what's causing the drag with burning DVD's
on the laptop w/Vista and one of the same programs (Nero) versus the
identical data with my PC and WinXP.

Did want to include a couple of my favorite places to search for free
programs as discussed here. One is through ZDNet.com --
http://downloads.zdnet.com/Windows/...rs+-+Audio+and+Video+-+Windows&licfilter=free,
and the other is TuCows.com -- http://www.tucows.com/software.html.

No doubt you're already well-versed with these two places, but wanted to
share just in case. Never know when someone else out there hasn't stumbled
onto them yet!

Hopefully we'll get an answer for this one day soon.

I didn't download ImageBurn but I did download Ashampoo Burning
Studio 6.

The result was something Vizzini would say....INCONCEIVABLE!!! :p

Ashampoo actually works with my Vista 64. Now, I am able to burn
both DVD and CD normal speed just like in XP. The lesson learned
here for me is that just because the default Vista's Burn icon
looks convenient that does not mean it IS. But I still wonder why
latest release Nero behave the same way like the built-in Vista
burning function. :sarc:

What version of Nero are you running? The latest, I believe, is
7.10.1.0 and it's a free download from Nero if you have any version 7.

Nero claims this version is Vista 64 compatible but I'm not absolutely
sure that it is.... :-(

Anyway, I dual boot and ALL my burning is done with Nero, but in
Windows XP.

I am not going to test other 3rd party application as I am quite
satisfied with my newly found Ashampoo that meet my requirement to
burn on my Vista Ultimate 64. :D

Glad it's working for you, I found Ashampoo didn't meet my needs so
installed Nero instead. I can't comment on burn speeds because I've
never tried to burn anything in Vista, only in XP. No reason, just
worked out that way so far.

Man - are you sure you are not me?

I went to bed thinkign about 6 hours would be right for a dvd.

When I got up it showed 98% done and then said it couldn't finish for some
****** reason. Why couldn't it tell me at the onset?

Im glad I have an Xp system still on my desk.

Has it gotten better?

Hey

Did image burn help?

I cannot believe it should take 4 hours or more to do a dvd.

I am not a geek but a CD take about 3 minutes on XP.

A dvd is about 7 times bigger - thus 7 times longer or 21 minutes - No???

Thanks
