DV-AVI import format greyed out

I am trying to capture video from my Sony digital camera connected to my
computer with a USB cable (at least on the computer side it is different on
the camera side). However the DV-AVI import format is greyed out and I can
not select this format. Why not ?

because it only works with a firewire connection (iLink in your Sony
manual).... USB is for analog capture and DV-AVI is a digital file.

Thank you - apologies if this was a trivial issue.

Anyway I have now managed to capture my video in avi format. I was hoping
that I could simply delete the old wmv format, open my project, browse for
missing file and then link it to the new avi file. Sadly that doesn't work as
the file format is different (something to do with the way it makes the
clips). So my question is - is there a quick way to do this or do I have to
re-edit my video all over again ?

Hi Bram,

My Managing > Source Files page has info about what files can be substituted
for others... my testing shows you could convert the DV-AVI file to a higher
quality WMV file, using Movie Maker, and then use the new WMV as a
substitute for the original.

I shouldn't have said that USB was for analog... it's also for other kinds
of digital video than DV.

Right - I think what I was meant to do was to open the .avi file in Movie
Maker, drag all the clips (unedited) onto the film strip and then save that
movie in a .wmv format. Does it matter which format I choose ? I tried a
random one (sorry forgotten which format but it resulted in a 800Mb file, as
opposed to the 12GB .avi file). However I could not link it to my orginal
project file - same message as before when I tried to link the .avi file to
my project saying different format etc. Looks like I have to do all my
editing again - unless I choose the wrong format to save my movie in ? Could
you recommend which format I need to choose to get it to work ?

yup, you're the 2nd one to catch me on that... I shouldn't have said that
USB is for analog... it's just not for Digital Video....
