during installation receive "Uninstall process running" error

WHile trying to install some software on a computer that has a Win. 2K OS I
have a window that opens stating "Uninstall process running". This error
message prevents me from being able to install any software on my computer. I
have tried turning off and back on the computer but still receive this
message.
How can I stop this from happening? Is there a setting I need to change?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

progress.

You can navigate to
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\
and delete the subkey "PendingFileRenameOperations" and any values under
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\FileRenameOperations

Make sure your temp folders are empty.
%SystemRoot%\temp\
%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temp\
