I finally finished setting up a win2k computer while logging in as
Administrator, installing software, desktop icons, networking, screen
savers, etc.

Now, I want to set up/change the user login to something other than
administrator, but I want to retain access to all the programs and desktop
settings that were set up while I was logged in as admin.

How do I do that?

Thanks.

1. Create a second admin account (you should have one
anyway, in case the password for the main account
ever goes south).
2. Log on under the second admin account.
3. Make the hidden "Default User" profile folder visible.
4. Rename it to "Default User.org" (just in case . . .).
5. Rename the Administrator's profile folder to "Default User".
6. Check the folder "Default User\Desktop". If you find any
shortcuts in there, move them to "All Users\Desktop".

All new users will now have the properties that you had
as an administrator, but not the permissions.

Create a second admin account, login using it, set folder options to
show hidden and system files & folders, then right click My Computer,
Properties, User Profiles tab, select the Administrator profile, click
Copy To and browse to Documents and Settings, Default User, click Ok and
Yes till it's done. Then create your user account, login and everything
will be as you want. You can set account type and permissions as
anything you wish.

I would NOT recomemnd renaming the Administrator folder, what's gonna
happen when they log in as Administrator again?

All you have to do is copy the administrator profile to Default User folder.

Steve

seems to work, mostly. :-)

Thanks!

It makes no difference whether you copy or rename
the administrator's folder. If you rename it, Win2000
will recreate it at the next logon (same as for any
other user who does not yet have a profile of his own!).

Ok, thanks, I wasn't sure about that. I know the user folders get
created at fisrt login but was not sure about the Administrator account.
