Duplicate Personal Folders

K

Kathie Thomas

I have a new computer and Office 2003. I copied over from my old computer
my mailbox.pst file to use. When Outlook opened it had two Personal
Folders - one at the top of the folder list and one at the bottom. I cannot
delete either as the Close folders option is greyed out. I checked on the
Microsoft site and followed the instructions for renaming one of them, and
to make sure that the email is being delivered to the correct one and then
tried again to close it - still greyed out. I read up on reconnecting my
old Outlook data file and followed the instructions - to no avail.

I then repaired Outlook, choosing to get rid of all the shortcuts and
modifications I made, and for a short time had only one Personal folder. But
as I reset the Folders list view and started to re-add my email addresses
again (the email accounts don't appear to transfer over at all) it has now
duplicated the folder again and I'm at a total loss as to why. I need to
get rid of this second Personal Folder - I have ACT! 6.0 and the email
function won't work whilst there are two Personal Folders showing up.

Can anyone advise on this please?

Thank you.

I'd love to know what instructions you followed. I know of no such
instructions on the Microsoft site. You never copy over a PST file. You
never rename a PST file. That corrupts your profile every time.
The Help file contain the instructions you should have followed. You will
need to create a new profile and follow these instructions.

I was in http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HA011170471033.aspx
and there were related pages titled Reconnect your old Outlook data file and
Troubleshoot folders. I was first alerted to the problem when researching a
problem with ACT at http://kb.sagesoftwareonline.com - in their knowledge
base.

I had already tried the page you suggested Russ and I cannot get rid of the
duplicate folder - it does not allow me to close it, it is greyed out. I
renamed the folder to MyStuff as indicated in the page your reference and
followed all the instructions but to no avail.

Kathie

Of course. Once you've corrupted your profile, those instructions are no
longer in play.
Follow the instructions I posted.

With due respect Russ I did follow the instructions you pointed me to before
I did anything else and before I posted here - it did not work.

Seems I'll have to keep looking.

They work fine.
I suspect you did not follow them correctly.
State precisely how you created your new profile and how you migrated your
old data to it so we can tell what went wrong. --

When you say 'create a new profile', do you mean create a new windows user,
or do you mean a new outlook profile? Creating a new windows user profile
is not a good option as there are toooooo many things tied into the current
windows profile. Duplicate Personal folders has been an ongoing problem for
many years and I would think that MS would have a more elegant solution.

I mean create a new Outlook profile.
This problem is getting worse all the time. I, too, would have thought
Microsoft would have a better solution. You can hack the registry to repair
your current Outlook Profile, but in Outlook 2003 that has gotten very
difficult because it is nearly impossible to identify the keys you need to
delete.
