Duplicate outlook process in task manager

I am using Outlook 2003 with XP Pro. Recently my Outlook has been hanging
sporadically. When opening the task manager I notice that even when I close
outlook.exe, another outlook.exe is occasionally present in the task manager.
What is happening and how can this be corrected>
