duplicate messages from 'rules'

I move my .pst account between my laptop and desktop when I travel. Which is
all the time.

After 'synching' using microsoft 'synch toy' and I open the .pst file on the
other machine, the 'rules I've set up don't work. I have to go to rules and
select all the rules again and then run them. After that they all work.

Why is that? Is there a way around this?

This is because the rules are linked to the machine as well. Outlook will
see that the rules are meant for a different machine and will disable them.
There is no way around this although duplicating the rules on either machine
might work. Make sure you then also add the condition "and stop processing
rules" or you'd end up with duplicates.
