Duplicate FIles in Explorer

Dave

Some time ago, and for reasons relevant at the time, I rearranged my
Explorer format to include, or maybe I should say add, a duplicate of My
Documents. It appears above My Computer in my current Explorer format.

The contents of these folders/files echoes exactly what is in Local
Disk/Documents and Settings/Dave/My Documents. A change in a file in either
location causes an identical change in the other location.

Things have now changed, and I find the second My Documents unnecessary.
Somewhere during the process of setting up this arrangement, I recall a
properties listing which referred to the second My Documents as copies,
duplicates, or something similar. I don't see that reference in any of the
property descriptions of my present setup.

It has been my understanding right along that when I was done with this
arrangement, I could simply delete this duplicate My Documents folder, and
since they are seen as copies, I would be back to what I want. I am unsure
of this however, and before I screw it up completely, I thought I would ask
this learned group if this makes sense.

Not sure I have explained this situation too well, but if nothing else you
can see what you are working with :)

Thx

It sounds like you have created a shortcut that points to the My Documents
folder. Assuming you haven't made changes to your system the shortcut will
display a small arrow in the lower left side of the icon. This is the one
you can delete. If it doesn't have the little arrow in the lower left it's
the actual directory and you don't wish to delete that one.

Interesting -
The icon of the suspect My Documents is not the typical file folder,
however, looks more like and opened mailing envelope. No arrow. Also, I
don't see anything about shortcuts in any of the properties.

Does that tell anybody anything?/

Right click on the folder, select 'properties', on the 'general tab' look for
"type" or "type of file". It will either read 'shortcut' or 'folder'.

I don't why you describe the icon as 'not typical', can you elaborate on why
it's different?

Thanks Jack Handey -

Properties for My Documents in both location show type as "File Folder"
As for the icon, I have never seen one like it before. If you can tell me
how to post it I would. The only place I know to look for other icons is
%SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll and it isn't there.

Guess this leads to another approach - if I just delete the duplicate MY
Documents, and it deletes more than I want, will System Restore get me back
to where I started?

Thx
Dave
