Duplicate file data

One of our accountants has an Excel file that when opened, opens as 2 files.
The window header displays filename.xls:1 and a second file is shown in the
window folder as filename.xls:2.

Any changes made to either copy, change in both files. The Save As funtion
creates a copy of both files. It is like having a mirrored copy active
within Excel, that we did not want. We finally were able to display both
files in a split screen and then copy the workbook to a new workbook function
to get a saved copy with only 1 instance.

Is this a corrupted file or is this an option that I am not aware of? Has
anyone seen this before?

It is an option under the window menu. All you need to do is open the file
then window>compare side by side and close one of the windows.

Thanks John! Do you have any idea how they may have opened the same file
twice? I am trying to reproduce the duplicate file and cannot open the same
file name twice.

It's not a duplicate file.
At some point someone selected "Window->New Window"
This opens a pane with a view of the same workbook (allowing comparisons between sheets,
if you have multiple sheets)..
The ":1", ":2" indicate the # of panes open (do Window-> New Window" again and you'll get
pane # ":3" etc etc.
Simply close the panes and save the workbook and the next time you'll be back to one
window.

Hi Rob, Thanks for the information. You were correct about the Window->New,
and I learned something new. Thanks everyone! Paul
