DUN can't see Winmodem

I'm having trouble setting up a dial up network connection using
Windows XP Pro.

I have a Winmodem on com4. However, whenever I create a dial up network
connection, it always ends up creating a DUN connection with a device error.

In the [Connect Using] section of the DUN connection it says:
(x)Modem Removed - Unavailable Device (COM1)

It won't allow me to select any other devices/com ports.

I've tried moving the modem to a different PCI slot.

I've also tried reset DUN using the following DOS command.
netsh int ip reset c:\tcpipreset.tx

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

thank you

Junk that Winmodem and get a real modem. Real modems are not Windows
Dependant. Real modems handle flow control internally in their
hardware. Winmodems depend on software for flow control which makes
them more prone to error.

Actually I did try two other PCI modems. Either way, the Dial Up Network
adapter will only look at Com1:

I've just built a machine. Onboard there's only Com1. However the
drivers on my PCI Zoom 56k Faxmodem either create or convince the OS and
other applications like 01 Communicate that there are more com ports.
Currently, the modem is working on Com 3. You might want to check for
driver upgrades.
