Dumb question...how to rebuild

R

Rachel

Might sound like a dumb question...but, I have a packard bell and have
found the power supply to be a nightmare. (the pc is about 3 yrs which
i'm told is the problem)

Can i rebuild with a different power supply, and even into a new case
with all the other bits i have?? or do i need to start from scratch.
I ask about the new case, as i'm in desperate need of more drive space
(cd/dvd etc)

Well, technically yes. The only hard part will be moving the PC to the new
case and reconnecting the power supply. Just make sure your new power supply
will fit in the case, and you know what connections you need for it. Its a
tough job when its built and it won't work and its hard to find the problem.
If you like challenges or have done this before go ahead. But on the safe
side, have a geek around to help.

There are no dumb questions, just dumb answers. Some wise old guy said that.
I hope I'm not contradicting my self.

In Rachel <[email protected]> had this to say:

My reply is at the bottom of your sent message:

The easiest thing in your situation to do would be to take your computer and
remove the hard drive. From there you'll put it into a new PC as a slave.
You'll then use a clone application to completely copy it to the new
computer. You'd then do a "repair installation" of windows XP which would
then set your install to use the new hardware. It's the best idea unless
your copy of XP is OEM because in some cases you'd have to buy a new copy of
XP because your copy will be restricted to that computer specifically. An
idea would be to just get a slave hard drive and add it to the system and to
replace the power supply - a process that takes all of a half hour if you go
slowly.

Go to your local bookstore and buy a book on building PC's,
such as:
"How to Build Your Own PC: Save a Buck and Learn a Lot"
by Charlie Palmer. (Note: you may not save a buck, but you
will learn a lot.)

I only see one other post. What makes you say Rachel is a troll?
Naturally, you may be right - I just wondered if you recognized this
person. Also, what is "msusenet moderator" supposed to mean?

Malke,
They asked so I said yes, I would moderate this board;
'msusenet' (http://www.msusenet.com)
And before some MVP starts pissing in the wind about "using a proper
newsgroup reader," what's the difference between your own;
'Technet' (http://tinyurl.com/bxfzx) web based "discussion groups,"
and this one?

First of all, I take exception to the "pissing in the wind"
characterization. I don't like most of those web-based forums that suck
off Usenet posts because 1) most of them aren't upfront about what they
are doing; 2) they make people register for something that really
doesn't require any registration - and what are those webmasters going
to do with the information; 3) they don't work well because the quoting
doesn't work properly; 4) since they are sucking off the Usenet posts,
it looks like I (and other MVPs) am posting on that "board" and I
prefer to choose where I post. Of course our posts are all available
via Google Groups, but GG doesn't present this as if we were *members*
of the web forum and the parasitic boards do. A newbie isn't going to
know the difference.

I have no idea if the msusenet forum with which you are affiliated
commits those sins or not, but I do know that others I have looked at
do these things. Ergo, I don't like them and I will continue to say I
don't like them. I don't consider this "pissing in the wind". I
consider it as my reaction to dishonesty - I don't like it.

I have no idea what the difference between your web forum, the web
interface to the MS Newsgroups, and the Technet discussion group is
because the Technet group isn't "mine" and I've never looked at it. I
don't use the web interface to the public MS newsgroups either because
it sucks.

My the objection to "msusenet moderator" is because you are posting on
Usenet and you know it. You may very well be a moderator on a web
forum, but it is misleading to say that you are a moderator on the MS
newsgroups - which don't have one. Using "msusenet moderator" in your
signature on the MS newsgroups implies an authority which does not
exist here.

It is supposed to indicate that the idiot has licked uncle Bill's arse 100 times over!!! this is akin to calling oneself MVP (Most Valuable Pirate) which you get by pirating uncle Bills products!!

what I want to know is whether one can get MCSEs or similar by doing the same!!

Hope this proves a useful contribution.
